redoute

A kind of public ball, particularly in the 18th century but carrying on into the 19th century in Austria and Germany, where dancers gathered haphazardly from all classes of society, usually at assembly halls called Redoutensäle in Germany. Composers of note, especially in Vienna, often wrote dances for redoutes.
