Redwood City

City and administrative headquarters of San Mateo County, north-central California; population (1990) 66,100. It is situated on the southwest shore of San Francisco. It was an early Bay Area port and shipbuilding centre with lumber mills and tanneries; modern deepwater facilities have fostered growth. The city is a noted producer of cut flowers, especially chrysanthemums. Other industries have included salt extraction from the bay, and computer, biotech, and other technological research and development connected with the industries of Silicon Valley, to the south. It is home to Canada College (1968).
