Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.04 sec.

Reed, John Shepard (1939– )

US banker. He became a senior vice-president of Citicorp in 1969, and by helping to pioneer the development of, among other things, automatic teller machines, he directed Citicorp's successful venture into commercial banking in the 1970s. He became chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) in 1984. In the late 1980s and early 1990s he led the bank through a period of retrenchment, scaling back peripheral operations and selling off real estate. In 1998 he oversaw its merger with Travelers Group to become Citigroup, serving as CEO and chairman until 2000. He was also a director of Altria Group 1975–2003 and again from 2005, having been appointed in the intervening two years as interim chairman and CEO of the New York Stock Exchange, where he oversaw the restructuring of the Exchange's corporate governance.

Born in Chicago, he was raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where his father worked as an Armour Company executive. After overcoming dyslexia, which caused him problems in school as a child, he earned engineering and management degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
