Regnart, Jacques

Regnart, Jacques (c. 1539–1599)

Flemish composer, brother of François Regnart. His two other brothers, Charles and Paschasius, contributed motets to a collection in which François and Jacques also appeared. The collection was edited by a fifth brother, Augustin, a canon at Lille.

He went to Vienna and Prague as a pupil to the Imperial chapel at an early age, became a tenor there in the 1560s, and in the 1570s was choirmaster and vice-kapellmeister. In 1585–96 he was in the service of the Archduke Ferdinand at Innsbruck, but lived in Prague for the last five years of his life.
