Rehoboth

Town in Bristol County, southeast Massachusetts; population (1998 est) 10,100. It is located 16 km/10 mi north-northwest of Fall River and 13 km/8 mi east of Providence, Rhode Island. An iron industry developed here in the 18th century, but Rehoboth remained essentially rural, and is a residential suburb of Providence and other nearby cities. It was incorporated in 1645.

Rehoboth was founded in 1636 by Congregationalists from Plymouth. The town was the scene of bloody fighting during King Philip's War (1675). The neighbouring town of Seekonk split off from Rehoboth in 1812.

The first iron forge dated from 1704, and the first cotton mill from 1809. There are 35 entries on the national register of historic places.
