Reich, Günter (1921-1991)

German-born Israeli bass-baritone. He made his debut in 1961, as Iago and later sang at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, Munich, and Salzburg. Best known for his work in contemporary music, he sang in the first performances of Blacher's 200,000 Taler (1969) and Penderecki's Die schwarze Maske (1986) and recorded Schoenberg's Moses (Moses und Aron) with Boulez and Gielen. Other roles included Dallapiccola's Ulisse, Busoni's Faust, Satan in Paradise Lost by Penderecki, and Morone in Palestrina. He sang Dr Schön in the first UK performance of the three-act version of Lulu (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, 1981).
