Reid, John (1947- )

British Labour politician, secretary of state for the home office from 2006. A political adviser to Labour's former leader Neil Kinnock 1983-95, Reid became MP for Hamilton North and Bellshill (formerly Motherwell North) in 1987. He held a succession of positions in Tony Blair's Labour governments from 1997, including Scottish secretary 1999-2000, Northern Ireland secretary 2000-02, party chair 2002-03, secretary of state for health 2003-05, and secretary of state for defence 2005-2006.

Born in Bellshill, Scotland, Reid obtained a doctorate in economic history from Stirling University. He worked as a research officer for the Labour Party 1979-83 and organized Scottish Trade Unionists for Labour 1986-87. In 1997-98 he was a defence minister and in 1998-99 a transport minister.
