Reincken, Johann Adam (1623–1722)

German organist and composer. After studying with Heinrich Scheidemann 1654–57, he became his assistant at the church of St Catherine at Hamburg in 1658, and succeeded him as organist in 1663, remaining in the post until his death. Bach walked from Lüneburg as a youth and later came from Cöthen to hear him play.

Choral and organ

chorale preludes, toccatas, fugues, and other pieces for organ; Hortus musicus for two violins, viola da gamba, and bass (published Hamburg, 1687); keyboard pieces.
