Reinhardt, Max (1873-1943)

Austrian producer and director. His expressionist style was predominant in German theatre and film during the 1920s and 1930s. Directors such as Murnau and Lubitsch and stars such as Dietrich worked with him. He co-directed the film A Midsummer Night's Dream 1935, a play he directed in numerous stage productions.

In 1920 Reinhardt founded the Salzburg Festival. When the Nazis came to power, he lost his theatres and, after touring Europe as a guest director, went to the USA, where he produced and directed. He founded an acting school and theatre workshop in Hollywood.
