Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.06 sec.

Reisner, George Andrew (1867-1942)

US archaeologist and Egyptologist. His fieldwork at Napata, El Gîza, and elsewhere earned him a reputation as the USA's first great archaeologist and excavator, and set the standard for scientific excavation techniques.

He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. After studying Semitics and Egyptology, he devoted his life to directing excavations in Egypt, Palestine, and Sudan for various US institutions (1898-1942). Although he spent most of his career excavating abroad, he was on the Harvard faculty 1896-97, 1905-42 and was curator of Egyptian art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts 1910-42.
