Reiter, Josef (1862-1939)

Austrian composer. He studied with his father, an organist. He taught and conducted in Vienna 1886-1907; was director of the Mozarteum at Salzburg, 1908-11; and conductor at the Hofburgtheater in Vienna 1917-18. He dedicated his Goethe Symphony to Hitler in 1931 and wrote a cantata to celebrate the Anschluss.

Works

operas Klopstock in Zurich (1894), Der Bundschuh (1894), Totentanz (1908) and Der Tell; incidental music for Raimund's Bauer als Millionär; masses and Requiem; choral works; six string quartets, two string quintets and other chamber music; part-songs; c. 120 songs.
