Remagen

Town in the Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on the left bank of the River Rhine, 25 km/15 mi southeast of Bonn; population (2001 est) 16,000. Remagen is a popular tourist centre.

The town was originally established by a Celtic population. It was later taken over by the Romans, who used its strategic position in order to defend the Rhine. In the late medieval period the city, which was known as Rigomagus, was fortified with strong walls; part of the city walls are still visible today. After the fall of the Romans, the Frankish kings took charge of the town. They were in turn overthrown. The Holy Roman Emperor Charles took control of the city in 1357. It was a crucial point in the Allied crossing of the Rhine as part of the general advance into Germany at the end of World War II.

Features of interest include the parish church of St Peter and St Paul, which dates back to 1003 and was rebuilt in 1246 in a Romanesque style.
