Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Remington, Eliphalet (1793–1861)

US inventor, gunsmith, and arms manufacturer and founder (with his father) of the Remington firm. He supplied the US army with rifles in the Mexican War 1846–48, then in 1856 the firm expanded into the manufacture of agricultural implements. His son Philo continued the expansion.

In 1816, Eliphalet Remington made a flintlock rifle at his father's forge in Utica, New York, with an accuracy that soon attracted great attention. This led to the setting-up of E Remington & Son in Ilion, beside the Erie Canal.
