Remonstrants

Dutch Calvinist sect formed in the early 17th century. They were followers of the Dutch theologian Arminius, who denied the strict Calvinist view on predestination. They set out their views in the tract Remonstrance (1610). Their attempt to introduce an element of free will into Calvinism was condemned by the Synod of Dort 1618-19, and they were vigorously persecuted by Maurice of Nassau until his death in 1625. They formed a separate church in 1795.
