remote access

Term used to describe the issue of, and the computer hardware and software designed to be used by, employees needing access to their company network and data whilst away from the office, either at home or travelling. The main problems relate to security, because public networks like the Internet are often used. An industry has emerged to provide special security devices and networking equipment to make remote access secure and reliable.
