Remsen, Ira

Remsen, Ira (1846–1927)

US chemist and educator. He founded the chemistry department at Johns Hopkins in 1876, where he trained a generation of eminent chemists. He was founding editor of the American Chemical Journal 1879–1914 and wrote several important textbooks. As Johns Hopkins' president 1901–13, he founded the school of engineering.

He was born in New York City and educated in Germany.
