Clair, René (1898-1981)

French film-maker. Originally a poet, novelist, and journalist, he was noted for his creativity and innovation. His early comedy Sous les toits de Paris/Under the Roofs of Paris (1930) made great use of the new innovation of sound. His other films include Un Chapeau de paille d'Italie/The Italian Straw Hat (1927), Le Million (1931), A nous la liberté (1931), and Porte des Lilas/Gates of Paris (1957).

Other films include Entr'acte (1924), The Ghost Goes West (1936), I Married a Witch (1942), and Le Silence est d'Or/Man About Town (1947).
