Renmark

Town in South Australia 257 km/160 mi northeast of Adelaide; population (1996) 4,400. Industries include grapes, citrus and stone fruits, wheat, wool, wine production, and food processing. Renmark is Australia's oldest irrigation settlement, founded in 1887 by the Canadian Chaffey brothers, who were granted 101,100 ha/249,700 acres on which to test their irrigation scheme.

A railway into the town opened in 1927, and the town remains at the centre of a rich agricultural district.
