Renouvier, Charles Bernard

    0.01 sec.

Renouvier, Charles Bernard (1815-1903)

French philosopher. He founded the journals L'Annee philosophique (1867-69) and La Critique philosophique (1872-79). Among his more important works are Essais de critique generale (1854-64), La Science de la morale (1869), and Histoire et solution des problèmes metaphysiques (1901). His theory of knowledge is largely based on Kant, but he rejects the concept of the ‘noumenon’ or thing-in-itself, and therefore seeks an account of the will and of human freedom in terms of phenomena. Renouvier was born in Montpelier, France.
