Rensselaer County

County in east New York; area 1,696 sq km/655 sq mi; population (1990) 154,400. It is bounded to the west by the Hudson River, the southeast by Massachusetts, and the northeast by Vermont lines. Its administrative headquarters and major manufacturing and business centre is Troy. The town of Rensselaer is also an industrial and commercial hub. There are many small residential villages scattered throughout the southern region of the county. Most of the county is agricultural, with dairy, truck, and poultry farms as well as orchards. The Taconic Mountains are to the southeast.
