Renton

Village in Dumbarton and Clydebank unitary authority, Scotland, situated on the River Leven, 2 km/1 mi north of Dumbarton; population (2001) 2,150. Its former calico-bleaching and printing industries have now given way to light engineering.

The 18th-century novelist Tobias Smollett was born nearby at Dalquhurn.

Renton

Town in King County, west-central Washington; population (1990) 41,700. It is situated at the south end of Lake Washington, 16 km/10 mi southeast of Seattle. A residential and industrial suburb, it developed as an early 20th-century clay and iron processing centre. Boeing has maintained a large aircraft plant here since World War II, and there is also a railway car plant. Other manufactures include electronic equipment and plastic products. Ocean-going ships dock at this freshwater port of entry, passing through the Ballard Locks between Puget Sound and Lake Washington. Horse races are held at Longacres Race Track.
