Lebanon

City and administrative headquarters of Lebanon County, southeast Pennsylvania, 34 km/21 mi northeast of Harrisburg; population (1990) 24,800. Lebanon is in the fertile Pennsylvania Dutch farming region and is known for its Lebanon bologna, a Pennsylvania Dutch sausage. Industries include iron and steel products, textiles, clothing, footwear, and chemicals.

The community was first settled by German immigrants in the 1720s, and the city was laid out in 1756. Because of nearby iron mines, Lebanon developed as an iron-producing centre; it was incorporated in 1868.
