Pescara

Canal port and resort in Abruzzi, eastern Italy, at the mouth of the Pescara River, on the Adriatic coast, 160 km/99 mi northeast of Rome; population (2001) 116,300. Hydroelectric installations supply Rome with power. Industries include shipbuilding, tourism, fishing, and the manufacture of clothing, processed foods, and building materials. Pescara is linked by ferry to Split in Croatia.

The town was the birthplace of the writer and dramatist Gabriele d'Annunzio in 1863.

River of central Italy; length 61 km/39 mi. Rising in the central Apennines, it flows generally northeast across Abruzzi region to the Adriatic Sea at Pescara. There are important hydroelectric installations near Popoli.
