Rasht

Capital of Gilan province, northwestern Iran; population (1991) 341,000. The city, along with the nearby port of Bandar-e Anzali, is an important trade centre for the region. Rasht was founded in the 14th century and was occupied several times by Russia, most recently by the Bolsheviks in 1920.
