Restrepo, Carlos Lleras

    0.05 sec.

Restrepo, Carlos Lleras (1908-1994)

Colombian politician and president 1966-70. His administration was extremely successful, particularly in regard to economic policy. Lleras instituted effective political reforms that significantly reduced inflation, improved the balance of payments deficit, and bolstered national economic growth. He also played a significant role in reducing the reliance on the one-crop coffee economy, through greater economic diversification.

Towards the end of his period in office, Colombia had attained high rates of economic growth, in part attributable to the economic policies formulated and implemented by Lleras.

Lleras was a member of the Liberal party, he served as its head in 1948, following the assassination of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, and again in 1961.
