Retford

Market town in Nottinghamshire, England, on the River Idle, 32 km/20 mi northwest of Newark; population (2001) 21,000. Industries include engineering and the manufacture of paper, dyes, rubber, and iron castings. The town also has a large agricultural trade.

Retford became a borough (unit of local government) in the Middle Ages, and was noted for its markets and fairs. The grammar school was founded in 1551.
