Reutter, (Johann Adam Karl) Georg (junior) (1708-1772)| Austrian organist and composer. He held several posts as kapellmeister (music director) in Vienna, both at court and at St Stephen's Cathedral. |
| He studied under his father Georg Reutter and with Antonio Caldara, was appointed court composer at Vienna in 1731, and in 1738 succeeded his father as chief kapellmeister of St Stephen's Cathedral, where Haydn was his pupil as a chorister. He was second court kapellmeister from 1747, first from 1751. He held these posts, in plurality with that at St Stephen's, to the detriment of the younger generation of composers, including Christoph Willibald von Gluck and Haydn. Music at the cathedral also suffered during this period, but this was at least partly due to budget cuts at the time. He was ennobled in 1740. |
Works Opera about 40, including Archidamia (1727), La forza dell' amicizia (with Caldara, 1728), Alessandro il Grande (1732), Dafne (1734), and Il sacrifizio in Aulide (1735). |
Oratorios Abel, La Betulia liberata (1734), Gioas. |
Church music 81 Masses; 6 Requiems; 126 motets, and much other church music. |
