Reutter, Hermann (1900–1985)

German composer. He studied under Courvoisier and others at Munich. In 1932 he became professor at the Musikhochschule of Stuttgart and later became director of the State Hochschule at Frankfurt. In 1956 he became director of the Stuttgart State Conservatory.

operas Saul (1928), Der verlorene Sohn (Gide, translated by Rilke, 1929), Doktor Johannes Faust (on the old German puppet play, 1936), Odysseus, Die Witwe von Ephesus (1954), Die Brücke von San Luis Rey (1954), Hamlet (1980); ballets Die Kirmes von Delft (1937), and Topsy (1950); oratorios Volks-Seele and Der grosse Kalender, cantata Gesang des Deutschen; four piano concertos (1925–44), violin concerto; chamber music, piano works; song cycle Weise von Liebe und Tod (Rilke).
