Revelstoke

Town in Columbia-Shuswap Regional District, southeast British Columbia, Canada; population (1991) 7,700. It is situated on the Columbia River, to the south of the Revelstoke Dam, between the Selkirk and Monashee mountains, and 406 km/252 mi east-northeast of Vancouver. It developed with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1886, and today is the trade centre of a mining, lumbering, farming, and resort region. Industries include brewing, sawmilling, and dairying. Hunting, fishing, and tourism are also important to the local economy. Mount Revelstoke National Park is to the northeast.
