Rey, Jean-Baptiste (1734-1810)

French conductor and composer. A chorister at the Abbey of St Sernin, he was appointed maître de chapelle at the cathedral in Auch at the age of 17, but left to become opera conductor in Toulouse. He later conducted at various provincial theatres until 1776, when he settled in Paris, becoming chief conductor at the Opéra in 1781; he gave there operas by Gluck and Piccinni. He was a professor at the Conservatory 1799-1802.
