Rhead, Frederick Hurten

Rhead, Frederick Hurten (1880–1942)

English-born US potter. He opened Rhead Pottery in Santa Barbara, California, in 1913. In 1927 he joined the Homer Laughlin China Company, West Virginia, as art director. There he created the art deco line of dishware, Fiestaware.

Born in Hanley, Staffordshire, a descendant of six generations of potters, he emigrated to the USA in 1902 to work as a designer at Weller Pottery and Roseville Pottery. He taught at University City Pottery and Arequipa Pottery.
