Confederation of the Rhine

Union of German states established under French protection after the abolition of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806. A French puppet confederation, it was designed to facilitate Napoleonic dominance over German states. It lasted until 1813.

Napoleon adopted the title of Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine. The Confederation's capital was Frankfurt. Its members included Saxony, Wurttemberg, and Bavaria, and several lesser states. After Napoleon's Russian campaign in 1812, the Confederation declined and collapsed the following year.
