Rhinelander

Town and administrative headquarters of Oneida County, north Wisconsin; population (1990) 7,400. It is situated on the Wisconsin River, 76 km/47 mi north-northeast of Wausau, in an area producing potatoes, berries, and dairy goods. It has a large paper mill, and is a lake and winter sports resort centre and the headquarters for Nicolet National Forest. An 1890s hoax involving the hodag, a forest ‘creature’ put together from hides and various other materials, gave Rhinelander the name Hodag City, by which it is widely known.
