Rhodope

Department of Greece in western Thrace, between the Bulgarian border and the Aegean Sea; area 2,543 sq km/982 sq mi; population (1991) 103,200. The eastern foothills of the Rhodope Mountains extend into the region. The capital is Komotiní.
