maraca

Latin American percussion instrument consisting of a hollow gourd partly filled with dry seeds or beans (although today modern materials are often used) which rattle when shaken. They are usually played in pairs, with one being held in each hand. Traditionally they form part of the rhythm section of Latin American bands. Classical composers who have used maracas include Sergey Prokofiev in Romeo and Juliet (1935).
