Ribeirão Prêto

Town in São Paulo state, Brazil, 300 km/186 mi northwest of São Paulo city; population (2000) 502,800. It is the centre of a prosperous area, cultivating cotton, rice, coffee, and sugar-cane, and is also an important industrial centre, producing steel. Its main industries include cotton-weaving, meat-processing, distilleries, and light engineering. It is important as a distribution point for the western part of the state and for parts of the states of Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, and Goiás.
