D'Oyly Carte, Richard (1844–1901)

A costume design for the Duke of Plaza Toro, in the Richard D'Oyly Carte company's production of The Gondoliers, by W S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, at the Savoy Theatre, London, England. The design is by Charles Ricketts (1866–1931). The first production of The Gondoliers at the Savoy Theatre took place in 1889.

English producer of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. They were performed at the Savoy Theatre, London, which he built. The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, founded in 1876, was disbanded in 1982 following the ending of its monopoly on the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. The present company, founded in 1988, moved to the Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham, in 1991.

When Richard D'Oyly Carte decided to add some rooms on to the theatre he built to house Gilbert and Sullivan's Savoy Operas, he took careful note of the luxury hotels they had stayed in on tour in the States.
