Richards, Bob

Richards, Bob (1926– )

US track and field athlete, and minister. He was an Olympic gold medallist in the pole vault in 1952 and 1956. He accepted the pastorate of a Brethren church in Long Beach, California, in 1957, but continued as an advocate of physical fitness in the USA.

He was born in Champaign, Illinois. A juvenile delinquent as a teenager, he found himself through religion and sports. He was ordained a minister in the Church of the Brethren in 1946.

In addition to his loving wife of 33 years Helena Gutierrez Richards, Bob is survived by his sons, Matthew and Lucas; Lucas' partner, Ilisha Arnold; a granddaughter, Nora Lynn; his father, Lawrence; his brother, Larry, and Larry's wife, Sharon; his sisters, Barbara and Sheila; as well as one niece and three nephews.
I counted 20 in total: two Lennons, two Richards, Bob Dylan's son (twice), a Presley, Marvin Gaye's daughter, but thankfully, no Peaches Geldof.
Ross Halfin's photo sessions with The Who, Keith Richards, Bob Marley, Aerosmith, The Smashing Pumpkins, Ozzy Osbourne and Pete Townshend, have graced numerous album covers, tour books and magazines for the past four decades.
