Richier, Germaine

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.07 sec.

Richier, Germaine (1904-1959)

French sculptor. She gained a major reputation after World War II with her febrile, expressionist sculptures based on animal life, for example The Ant 1953 (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich).

Richier trained in Paris 1925-29 under Émile-Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) but developed her spiky, threatening, anthropomorphized figures in Switzerland during World War II. Her highly original style was much imitated during the 1950s.
