Richland

City in Benton County, southeast Washington, on the Columbia River, northwest of Walla Walla; population (2000) 38,700. It is a centre for research for the US Department of Energy and a major producer of plutonium for nuclear weapons. It grew as a residential community for employees of the Hanford Engineer Works that helped to develop the atomic bomb from 1943.
