Richmond, George (1809-1896)

English painter. With Samuel Palmer and Edward Calvert, he was one of the group of William Blake's followers known as ‘the Ancients’. First known for his watercolour landscapes, he later became a notable portrait painter.

His son William Blake Richmond (1843-1921) was also a painter. He studied at the Royal Academy, London, and in Italy and was first influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, but was later part of the neoclassical movement with Lord Leighton. He was Slade professor of Fine Art at Oxford 1878-83, and in 1891 he undertook the interior decoration of St Paul's Cathedral in mosaic.
