Richmond Hill

Town in York Regional Municipality, south Ontario, Canada; population (1991) 80,100. It is located 24 km/15 mi north of Toronto. It has undergone rapid suburban growth; its population increased by 70% in the period 1986-91. The University of Toronto's David Dunlap (astronomical) Observatory is in the town. Originally known as Mount Pleasant, it developed in the early 19th century as an agricultural community.
