Richmond Hill

Town in York Regional Municipality, south Ontario, Canada; population (1991) 80,100. It is located 24 km/15 mi north of Toronto. It has undergone rapid suburban growth; its population increased by 70% in the period 1986–91. The University of Toronto's David Dunlap (astronomical) Observatory is in the town. Originally known as Mount Pleasant, it developed in the early 19th century as an agricultural community.
