Richter, Franz Xaver (1709-1789)

Moravian bass, violinist, and composer. Appointed vice kapellmeister at the Abbey of Kempten in 1740, he entered the service of the Mannheim court about 1747, first as a singer and violinist, later becoming court composer. His work at Mannheim made him a prominent member of that school of symphonists.

From 1769 he was music director of Strasbourg Cathedral.

39 Masses; two Requiems; two Passions; numerous motets, and other church music.

Orchestral and chamber

almost 70 symphonies; concertos; string quartet and other chamber music.
