Rickard, ‘Tex’ (1870–1929)

This photograph was taken in Madison Square Garden in New York, USA, in 1927, the year in which the first Model A rolling prototype was produced. It was not until 1928 that the Model A was commercially manufactured, and replaced the original Model T Ford.

US boxing promoter. He promoted matches during boxing's ‘golden age’, including the Jack Dempsey–George Carpentier bout in 1921 – boxing's first US$1 million gate – and the Dempsey–Gene Tunney match in 1927.

He was born in Kansas City, Missouri. A colourful, buccaneering character, he ran a gambling business in Texas, made and lost a fortune in the Yukon in the 1890s, and arranged his first prize fight in 1906.
