Rideau Canal

Canal in eastern Ontario, Canada; length 203 km/126 mi. It connects Ottawa with Kingston on Lake Ontario, by way of the Rideau River and lake, and by connections with the Mud Lake and Cataraqui River. The canal was built between 1826 and 1832. Never of great economic significance, it is used mainly by pleasure boats and tourists. The canal has a system of 50 dams and 47 locks.
