Ridgecrest

Town in Kern County, south-central California; population (1990) 27,700. It is situated in the Indian Wells Valley (the north Mojave Desert), 120 km/75 mi east-northeast of Bakersfield. It is a growing residential centre, and is home to Cerro Coso Community College (1973).

China Lake, a playa (temporary lake) 11 km/7 mi to the northeast, gives its name to the huge China Lake Naval Weapons Center, established in World War II. The Trona Pinnacles, 26 km/16 mi to the east, are a field of hundreds of calcium carbonate spires up to 30 m/100 ft tall, in a rich borate-producing area.
