A dependency of Guernsey, Alderney also flies the St George's cross. The flag bears the island's emblem. This is a green roundel (small disc) with an ornate gold border, bearing a lion holding a sprig of leaves.

Third largest of the Channel Islands, with its capital at St Anne's; area 8 sq km/3 sq mi; population (2001) 2,030. Tourism flourished on Alderney from the early 20th century. The main employers are now tourist-related businesses and services providing building and maintenance work for locals and immigrants. There is also a small finance industry.

The island was evacuated in 1940, during World War II, and under German occupation. The islanders started to return in 1945.

Alderney is the former name for all breeds of dairy cattle of the Channel Islands, including the Jersey and Guernsey breeds. There was a short-lived horticultural business on the island, exporting flowers and produce to UK markets, but increasing transport costs and competition from subsidized production in the UK and Europe gradually killed the business.
