Riemann, (Karl Wilhelm Julius) Hugo (1849-1919)

German musicologist. Among his many publications are a Musiklexikon (1882), Handbuch der Musikgeschichte (1904), Opernhandbuch (1887), works on notation, harmony, phrasing, and history. He edited many standard works and also composed mainly teaching pieces for piano.

He studied law at Berlin and Tübingen, music at the Leipzig Conservatory. He later became lecturer at the university there, 1878-80 and again in 1895 until 1901, when he became professor.
