Rieti, Vittorio (1898–1994)

Italian-born US composer. He studied with Frugatta at Milan and Respighi in Rome, but destroyed all his works written up to 1920. In 1939 he became a US citizen.

Works

Opera and stage

the opera Teresa nel bosco (1934); ballets Noah's Art (1922), Barabau (1925), Waltz Academy, The Sleep-walker, Robinson and Friday (after Defoe, 1924), and David's Triumph (1937); incidental music for Pierre Corneille's L'Illusion comique and Giraudoux's Electre.

Orchestral

seven symphonies (1929–77); Notturno for strings; concerto for wind instruments and orchestra; violin concerto, harpsichord concerto, three piano concertos (1926, 1937, 1955); two cello concertos.

Chamber

Madrigal for 12 instruments (1927), partita for flute, oboe, string quartet, and harpsichord; sonata for flute, oboe, bassoon and piano; Second Avenue Waltzes for two pianos, piano pieces.
